[ARCHIVED] Severe Weather Expected

The National Weather Service in Midland has issued a severe weather advisory for later today, with the highest potential for dangerous storms issued in over 10 years. This situation should be taken very seriously. Stay alert later today to changing weather conditions and be prepared to seek a safe place if needed.

I can't stress enough how important it will be to follow the weather today and tonight across portions of southeast New Mexico and all of West Texas. I have attached one image, which is also on our website.

It has been many years since any part of our area was in a high risk. However, I want to emphasize that even if you aren't in the high risk, you are still susceptible to all the threats mentioned in this graphic below. Locations along and east of a line from Tatum to Hobbs to Fort Stockton can expect thunderstorm development later this afternoon into the evening. When storms develop this afternoon, we expect them to become severe very quickly. If you are in the outlook area, treat today as a high end event.

As was stated in the Hazardous Weather Event issued earlier this morning:

A significant severe weather event is likely later today and
tonight, especially across the Permian Basin and Lower Trans Pecos.
Very large to giant hail will be possible, along with tornadoes, some
of which could be significant, and damaging winds. The greatest risk
for significant severe weather today into tonight will be across the
eastern Permian Basin and the western Low Rolling Plains.
